American eh?

So you really think you're Canadian eh? Prove it! Is there really that much difference between you and your neighbours to the south? Sure you spell neighbours different and your accent might stand out in Texas or Alabama but when it comes down to the important stuff Canadian teenagers are really no different than American teenagers. Right?!?
You watch the same TV programs, drink the same pop (and pretty much the same wobbly pops). You wear the same fashions - maybe only a few months behind your American counterparts. You listen to the same popular musical artists (just check out the top 25 on Itunes or the playlist on your local radio station). You don't know anymore about Trudeau than you do about Reagan. When it comes to food - its all basically the same. Even the sports teams you cheer for are all American - I mean who really cheers for the Leafs...
You think you are really different than Americans but chances are that you know more American presidents and what they did than you know Canadian Primeministers and what they did. You watch the NFL not the CFL. You probably follow the twitter account of popular American musicians, movie stars and celebrities. You care about what happens to the U.S.A more than you do about what happens to Canada. If you follow politics at all you care about who is running for president. You could list the 10 most important dates in American recent history but you might not even get 3 Canadian events.
Basically, Canadian collective consciousness is dead. There is very little that actually makes you feel connected to other Canadians at all.
Think about this...
If the U.S.A were to take over Canada the only things that would really change is that our money would be less colourful, our beer would be slightly less toxic and our speedometers would all read in mph...
So yeah Canadians are basically Americans - right?.

  1. I do not think Canadians are American. We have free health care. Americans have to pay.
We have a Prime Minister and they have a President. Just because we listen to the same
music people can be different. This is why I think Canadians are not like Americans.

  2. I believe that our generation is just as Canadian as the generation before us. I think this because it doesn’t matter that we wear name brand clothing that is from the states we also have name brand clothing from Canada that is super popular. For example if you did a survey asking how many teenage girls and boys own lululemon about 80-90% of them will either have some or a lot of it. We may not show our Canadian pride all day every day like the americans, no but we would rather go home at the end of the day and say wow I live being Canadian rather than being American. Unlike the states we have free health care because we fight for it were the usa doesn’t they just stay where you have to pay for it. In conclusion I believe that yes we are the same in many ways but everyone in Canada is proud to be Canadian and would rather live here than anywhere else!

  3. I am Canadian because for any sports I watch I only cheer for only the Canadian teams. I also go to the royal Canadian air cadet, squadron 225 and have been going for a year now going onto two. I’m German, Italian, Irish, British, Russian, Dutch, and also little bit American. But I may be a little American but that don’t mean I like the Americans I only like Canadian teams for sports and I also prefer Canadian meat then American.

  4. I think we are Canadian and not Americans. Even know Canadians and Americans are similar in a lot of the same ways we still have things that are distinctive to Canada that make us different than America. We have are own clothing brands, actors, bands, stores, etc. We also have are own government that is run different from the U.S.A we have prime ministers not presidents. Those are only some of the things that make us Canadians and not American. That’s why I think I’m a Canadian and not an American.

  5. Why does everyone think we are Americans. Just because we may wear Americans brands and drink the pop or soda how they share it. Yes I do believe that I am Canadian and proud to listen to an electronic dance artist that is from Canada. Yes i do wear some Americans clothing. We do have a very famous beef. Our health care is free in Canada, not like America where is can cost to get a check up and if you have a broken bone or sick. We do have accents from using eh, ze. I talked to my American friends and they have said our Canadian accents to the American accents are some what different. The reason I am not American because I will cheer for my sport team from Canada.

  6. In my opinion I don’t think Americans are the same as Canadians, they may be similar but there are not the same. Canadian and American styles, music and television may be parallel but our thoughts and beliefs are different for example in Canada we have a very diverse country and we are proud of that but in America there culture is also diverse but they separate there cultures and are plagued by racism even if most Americans don’t like to admit it. Also in America the government doesn’t help you out when it comes to things like healthcare which teaches you that you have to earn everything by yourself but in Canada you have to earn everything yourself but if you need help to pay for something like healthcare or get a loan to start a business the government will help you. Another way Canada and America are different is how patriotic the people are for there country and the States have lots of patriotism but in Canada they are still patriotic people but not nearly as “loud” about there opinion on there country. Another way Canada is different is we have to different languages that we consider the language of our country so we can communicate with more people from different countries from around the world, but in the states there main language is English so if you would immigrate there you would have to learn English to get by and that could assimilate your old language.

  7. I believe that our generation as Canadians is the same as Americans. Due to every thing being so revolutionized other than our pride we are all the same. Our pride has gotten the best of all of us and turned our nation into a prejudice, and judgmental country. I believe that if a survey was taken and there were 3 American’s in a room with 3 Canadian’s you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two nationalities because of all the outsourcing and the way people were raised we are really all the same. An American can be brought up in a terrible home and fit the stereotype, but that’s not always the case, I personally know a lot of American’s that are very sweet hearted and caring that would fit the Canadian stereotype. On the other note I know a lot of Canadian’s that are ignorant and would fit the American stereotype. Judging people by where they are from is a form of racism. Being racist towards the American’s makes you the same as them. Peace and Love.

  8. I feel as if it is the generation before us had a better opportunity to learn about Canada where as we don’t really learn about Canada as much as we should. We live in a time of technology and the sad truth is that Americans create a lot of the technology. We don’t have history class like they do. But yet we learn about America more than we should .we should be learning more about Canada than America I mean our birth certificate clearly say we are Canadian. We as Canadian teenagers were born in a time of significant change. We can not be blamed if we are increasingly becoming American, can we? We as teenagers absorb information and most of this information we absorb is in fact American because we aren’t taught enough about Canadian history and Canadian ways of living. So who is really to blame when it comes to Canadians increasingly becoming Canadian? We can’t be blamed for becoming assimilated with America I mean you really can’t find things that are Canadian anymore beside maple syrup. It isn’t our generations fault

  9. I believe that most people today in Canadian society have been converted to be like American people. Why I believe this is because if you took a Canadian teen and put them beside a American teen it would be hard to tell the difference. As Canadian teens we dress the same as our neighbors we listens to the same music and as far as most adults are concerned we almost act the same. I think we aren’t identical to America but there are some similarities that make us a lot alike. Most of our music is the same to because Canadian top 100 song charts are the same as American music charts. We as Canadians are being exposed to American life heavily with they’re way of high class living and having to have material things to show our worth. Why I say this is because American’s like to jack up there vehicles and spend as much money as they can to make themselves look like they have a lot of money. But if you have noticed if you drive around town you see people with lifted trucks and big rims to make themselves look like they have a fancy vehicle. Canadians also are being exposed to American life in the food industry to if you look in town there is only 1 Canadian based food corporation that is Tim Horton’s. Other than that all you see is Kfc,Mcdonalds,Taco Time that are all based from America. So I believe that we aren’t the same as American’s but there are a lot of similarities that make us like our neighbor’s to the south.

  10. No we are not essentially American we are Canadian. We are Canadian because we have our own identity. We have our own clothing brands, our own stores, musicians, actors, etc. We have our own accent that stands out to the rest of the world including the United States. We have our own TV/radio stations. It is true that we know more about American presidents than we know about Canadian prime ministers, but isn’t that our schools fault. All we ever talk about are American current events and what happens there. We have free health care that’s something that the Americans have never had or are not going to have anytime soon. That’s something Canadians have fought for along time to get and to keep .

  11. I don’t think Canadians are like Americans because we have a Prime Minister and Americans have a President of the US. Also I think Canadians have a better way of communicating with each other. Sure we may listen to the same music but that’s only because the Americans are more famous then the Canadians. We also might have the same fashion taste but only because all teenagers are known for hoodies, blue jeans, regular T-shirts, and sometimes even short shorts. Just because we have all these in common doesn’t mean we are the same. Canadians also have different foods then Americans for example a poutine.
I think the reason why people think Canadians and Americans are the same is because the Americans have more stuff available for Canadians to see and buy. I also think it’s because they are trying to make Canadians become Americans. Another reason for this thinking is because we are not a famous bunch like the Americans so they tend to think we are just like them but deeply down we are our own country and were glad to be our own Canadian country.

  12. I believe that my generation is truly Canadian. We have our own identity but in the long run we are a lot like the American’s. Go to a mall in Canada then go to a mall in America they are pretty much the same we all have the same stores with the same fashion and styles. Cultures are shared among everyone some adapt to it more then others. As a Canadian I do know that not all of us are kind like our stereotype, I know people from Canada that would not fit the stereotype that we are known for some fit the America or any other cultural group. I am a proud Canadian don’t get me wrong but Canada and the United States and us are not so different. We drink the same pop and beer, cheer for the same hockey teams and eat at the same restaurants. Americans and us look the same we all have the same body type and we have child obesity just like the states. Soon if we were to become one country things would not be so different for all of us and only a couple things would change.
