Greatest Canadian Letter Writing Competition
Great Canadians past and present have represented the values and identity of Canada to the rest of the world. This project attempts to help recognize the outstanding achievements these individuals have made to Canada.
The Project has five parts. It is intended as an independent individual project but you may make a case to work in a partnership with another student if the project warrants working together. Talk to Mr. F before deciding to work as partners.
Part One:
Based on our discussions of Canadian identity in this course so far, write a paragraph outlining the most important parts of being a great Canadian.
Part Two
Create a chart listing five character traits that make a person great. Put each different trait in a separate column (examples: Loyal, Funny, Determined, Unselfish, Courageous, Intelligent, etc,) In each column list -in rank order- three Canadians that you feel match that quality or trait. Then at the bottom list a non-Canadian who best represents that character trait. See exemplar below…

Part Three: Choose your Greatest Canadian.
Based on the characteristics you have identified as important Create a list of at least three people that you would like to write to. You may choose from one’s that have already been written to or new ones that are missing from our wall of fame. See the list at the bottom of this page for examples:
Find the address. This is the hardest part of this assignment. Athletes can be contacted through their sports team. TV stars through their network. Musicians through their record label. Other people may be on a speaker’s tour, and can be contacted through them. Try to find out who the stars agent is, and contact your hero through their agent. If your Great Canadian is no longer alive you may need to write another representative of that person (EXAMPLE: to write to Terry Fox you may want to write to the director of the Terry Fox Run Isadore Sharp --OR-- if you want to write to Pierre Trudeau you may want to choose his son Justin.)
The first person to find an address for a certain celebrity gets to write them!
Part Four: Create a Tribute Artefact.
You may need to research your candidate in more depth to identify in order to get to them in greater detail. Use this research to create an artefact that will honour their contribution to Canada. Some examples of artefacts you may want to do are: create poster that displays the important symbols of this person’s career; make a sculpture out of items that this person is famous for (i.e. Hockey sticks in the shape of 99 for Wayne Gretzky); write/record a song or music video honouring them; create a graphic novel with your character as a super hero; create a painting or other work of art that honours them somehow; build a fan site for this person; do a video montage of their life accomplishments.
Criteria for your artefact: It should in some way reflect the outstanding qualities that you admire about the person you have chosen. It should be possible to send this artefact to the chosen Great Canadian once arrangements have been made.
It should be original.
Here is an example of video compiled by someone honoring Terry Fox it may help give you ideas about the type of artefact you may want to create.
Part Five Write a Letter.
Your letter should outline why you are doing this (as a part of your class project). It should identify why you believe this person is a Great Canadian and should include a picture or other evidence of the artefact that you have created. It should ask them to respond by sending a signed picture of themselves. It should also ask them to describe the most important aspect of being Canadian for them. It should also ask for details in how to get this artefact to the individuals. An example/template of your letter is included in this assignment. All letters should be hand written on school stationary. Letters will be submitted to your teacher before they are sent. The school will pay for postage.
Your grade will be based on the work you do not on the individual response. The standard project rubric will be applied to this assignment.
